CHARLES CONRAD'S LUNAR SURFACE BACKPACK STRAP.
USED ON TWO LUNAR EXCURSIONS DURING APOLLO 12.
Sub-strap from the "number 2 strap" of Conrad's Primary Life Support System (PLSS). White nylon webbing with two rivet snaps, 12 inches long by ¼ inch wide, with embedded lunar dust.
The strap is INSCRIBED AND SIGNED "This backpack sub-strap worn by me on the moon! Charles Conrad."
The PLSS ("backpack") was secured directly to the astronauts' spacesuits with four straps. Each strap ended with a latching clip. The shoulder straps connected to a ring assembly on the upper chest of the suit, and were designed to carry the majority of the weight of the PLSS. The lower straps, preventing the PLSS from shifting sideways, were connected to rings just above each hip. The length of each strap could be adjusted to ensure optimum fit.
With CHARLES CONRAD'S signed provenance note, stating that the sub-strap "was worn during both my moonwalks on the Ocean of Storms, Moon, on November 19-20, 1969! ... This sub-strap ... which helped hold the 'PLSS' Backpack on my spacesuit during my moonwalks, became directly exposed to the lunar environment as a result!
Our backpack straps were individually fitted to each astronaut, and designed for one-time use due to their customization, for later discard with our backpacks on the Moon. We were allowed to keep, and return, a few personal mementos from the Moon as keepsakes, and I included these disposable straps among mine."
