SYLVANUS THAYER MEDAL.

The Sylanus Thayer Medal awarded to James Webb in 1981, together with a presentation sword. The obverse with bust of Sylvanus Thayer by Laura Gardin Fraser. The reverse with the coat of arms of the US Military Academy at West Point and the words "West Point" and "Duty, Honor, Country." The rim of the medal inscribed with "James Edwin Webb 1981." Struck in gold by the Medallic Art Company, marked 10 karat, 80 mm diameter, approximately 363 grams. With case. * Together with presentation sword and scabbard, the blade engraved with "U.S.M.A.," mounted with a plaque below recording the presentation to Webb by the Corps of Cadets in appreciation of his extraordinary achievements as a leader in aerospace programs, September 24, 1981.

The Sylvanus Thayer Medal is awarded annually by the US Military Academy in honor of its fifth superintendent, and is presented is to a outstanding citizens whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify the motto, "Duty, Honor, Country." Previous recipients include Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and Neil Armstrong.
