APOLLO ZONE FILM CHART—FIRST LUNAR MISSION'S LANDING AREAS.

"Apollo Zone." Cronopaque lunar equatorial zone chart based on Lunar Orbiter 4 photography. Army Map Service for NASA/MSC Mapping Sciences Laboratory, 10½ x 52 inches.

The Apollo Zone was made up of seven sites along the lunar equator to provide flexibility for the initial lunar landings. These sites reflected the concerns of terrain issues, sunlight angles, earth launch delays, and earth emergency return. Landing site 2 was selected for the Apollo 11 mission, deemed the safest for the first lunar landing mission. Site 7 was used for Apollo 12 which had the added bonus of the landing spot of the Surveyor 3 robotic landing probe. Apollo 14's landing point was a new site targeted for science objectives based on engineering experience gained from the previous two landings.
Inscribed by a member from the first three lunar landings—BUZZ ALDRIN, ALAN BEAN, and EDGAR MITCHELL. Each has marked his landing site with an "X" or a circle. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED: "Buzz Aldrin, Apollo XI, 7 – 20 – 69"; "Ocean of Storms, Alan Bean, Apollo XII LMP, Nov '69"; and "Fra Mauro, Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 LMP, 2 / 71."
