SATELORB.

3 draftman's sketches for high-altitude manned ballooning capsules:
1. "Design concept for Project Satelorb Junior." June 25, 1958. Isometric cutaway of gondola with curvature of the Earth far below, 2 exterior views.
2. "Exploded view Satelorb Junior capsule." June 25, 1958.
3. "Proposed Winzen balloon station for ONR Air Branch." June 20, 1957. Several cutaway and exterior views, subtitled "Proposed Project Bal-orbiter."
All pencil on tracing paper. Approximately 34 x 22 inches.

"As early as April 1957, Winzen Research, Incorporated submitted an "unsolicited proposal" for a balloon-borne "Satelorb" research platform capable of weeklong flights with five or more men at 100,000 feet. This would have the great advantage over a one-man capsule of permitting individual specialization on balloon piloting and on different research functions" (History of Research in Space Biology and Biodynamics, 1958). The first drawing is particularly fanciful, showing Satelorb far higher above the Earth than 100,000 feet.
