A Naples terraglia group of two strolling ladies, circa 1790-1800
Footnotes
Provenance:
An Italian private collection
This figure is doubtlessly related to the famous series of the Borgesia Napoletana designed by Domenico Venuti and Giovanni Schettino as table decoration for the various Real Fabbrica services produced in the late 18th century (Caròla-Perrotti 1986, pp. 524-527). These figures appear in biscuit, some in polychrome decorated porcelain, and some in a decorated terraglia, as Donatone (1990) illustrates in plate 4 of his book on Neapolitan creamware. Donatone supposes that although these figures are unmarked, they may have been made at the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea as well.
