A Meissen model of Empress Catherine II of Russia's favourite dog, second half 19th century

After the model by J.J. Kaendler, the recumbent greyhound on a blue cushion decorated with flowers and foliage, moulded with gilt lace around the edge and four gilt tassels at the corners, the dog painted in shades of brown, wearing a moulded gilt collar, inscribed on the underside of the base in black 'Chien favori de feu S.M. l'Impératrice Catherine de Russie.', 42.3cm long, crossed swords mark in blue (haircrack to underside of base)
