A rare Zürich figure of a broom-seller, circa 1775
Carrying a bundle of broom-heads slung over his left shoulder, wearing a black hat, pale-green waistcoat with white shirt and pale-grey breeches, the square base moulded with paving stones, small stones and moss, 16cm high, incised E.4
Footnotes
Two smaller Zurich figures of street vendors on very similar square bases were in the Alfred Schwarzenbach Collection, sold Sotheby's Zurich, 7 May 1974, lots 97 and 98, illustrated by Ducret 1959, Die Zürcher Porzellanmanufaktur, vol 2, illustrations 162 and 312. The soft paste body and pastel colours of the Zurich factory are well represented by this rare and important figure.
