A Nymphenburg cabinet cup and saucer, circa 1820
The cup finely painted with a rectangular scene depicting a buttero herding a Marremma cow in a mountainous landscape, within a gilt frame, the cup interior and handle with burnished gilt ground, gilt borders, impressed shield mark to saucer (2)
Footnotes
The long horned cow is typical of the Maremma area of Italy, and the saddle of the cow-herdsman is indicative of him being a 'Buttero'. Still today these cows roam free and the wide saddles are used by the modern 'Butteri'.
