Footnotes

Provenance:
E.A. Titgemeyer Collection, Osnabrück

This dish probably belonged to a service dating to around 1745 that used the models otherwise only known in the services for the Elector Clemens August of Cologne and the service for Heinrich Graf von Podewils, dating to 1741-42. This service is distinguished by the slightly later style of naturalistic flower decoration (deutsche Blumen), as opposed to the botanical style (Holzschnittblumen) of the service for Clemens August. The moulded shells around the rim of the later service were not gilded (an example from this service from the Hoffmeister Collection was sold by Bonhams London, 25 November 2009, lot 71).

It seems probable that the gilding on the rim of this dish and the crowned 'CA' cypher for Clemens August were added at a later date to make it seem it belonged to the service for the Elector of Cologne. The style of flower decoration, however, and the painting of the CA cypher, rule this out.
