A very rare Meissen butter box and cover from the 'Christie-Miller' service, circa 1740
Superbly painted with quatrelobe landscape panels alternating in puce camaieu and polychrome enamels, reserved against a gilt trellis band, the cover with two similar polychrome scenes enclosed by a band of brown-edged gilt foliate scrollwork, 11.9cm across handles, impressed 23 (2)

Sixty-one pieces of this service, including only two such butter boxes and covers, said to have been purchased by Samuel Christie-Miller in 1840 from a member of the Orleans family, were sold by his descendants in 1970. Only a handful of other pieces from the service are recorded.
