Footnotes
Provenance: The Watney Collection, Part I, sold in these rooms on 22 September 1999, lot 425, The Godden Reference Collection. Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), pls 550 and 551, p 444 and colour pls 115 and 116, p 438 and by Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelain (1973), pl 87A and discussed at p 119. Exhibited: Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition, Shrewsbury 1972, no 153. A similar jug in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Caughley and Worcester Porcelains, pl 132 and is the only other recorded example of this mark which bears witness to the early partnership of Ambrose Gallimore and Thomas Turner at Caughley in 1772. The prints of Britannia and Fame were almost certainly engraved by Robert Hancock, as a number of advertisements and notices refer to his involvement at Caughley in 1775.
