Footnotes
This unmarked bottle has been buried to heighten its iridescence. The shape of the long neck and rounded body is typical of the early 1740s. It was at this date that port was becoming popular in England (inspired by the Methuen Treaty in 1703). It had to be laid down for some time before drinking and thus the bottles had to conform to a regular shape. It was for this reason that decanter and bottle forms began to diverge at this period: decanters could maintain their bulbous shapes whilst bottles had to become straighter and more regular.
