Late 16th/Early 17th Century, Probably Saxon
Of iron, with hammer-head of tapering circular section encircled by an incised line and balanced by a beak-shaped fluke with turned moulding, the latter becoming stiff diamond in section and sparsely incised with lines, block-shaped socket fluted on one side, incised by a 'X' on the other and surmounted by a domed button finial, slender haft of circular section becoming square and incised with line borders above the grip, and wooden grip (wormed) between a disc-shaped hand-guard and pommel, the head with slender belt hook on one side incised with diagonal lines and with trefoil-shaped finial (some light pitting overall)
