A Turkish Shamshir, And A Persian Shamshir
The First With Turkish Silver Marks, Both 19th Century

The first with curved finely watered single-edged blade (minor areas of pitting), silver-mounted hilt comprising quillon-block chased with foliage centred on an oval on both sides, pointed langets, and tapering quillons with bud-shaped terminals, silver-covered grip with bands of filigree along each side and secured by twisted silver wire at the base, and foliate engraved pommel-cap with ring finial, in original wooden scabbard covered in leather (incomplete) with silver locket en suite with the hilt, deep silver-damascened chape (damaged) and shaped suspension mounts (damascening worn), the latter each with suspension ring; the second with curved watered single-edged blade (some surface rust) fullered along the back over half its length on each side and cut with a panel of Arabic calligraphy along one side of the forte, and on the other with a circular panel containing Arabic calligraphy above a circular panel containing a crudely chiselled tiger, hilt comprising characteristic quillon-block (one quillon repaired) with button terminals, iron grip-strap now secured by wire at the base, dark horn grips each with a pewter strap (one missing) along the side secured by three nails each with fluted domed brass head, and faceted pommel-cap, in original wooden scabbard covered in leather with iron locket, chape and suspension mounts, the last with original leather belt (worn overall) (2)
