A Bosnian Dagger
19th Century

With sharply tapering double-edge blade of flattened diamond section cut with three lines converging towards the point, the forte with characteristic gold-damascened chiselled decoration on both sides involving a line of arrowhead-shaped motifs, and waisted walrus-ivory hilt of ovoidal section with rounded medial band, carved in low relief with turbanned figures, grotesques and a double-headed eagle between flowers and within borders of running arabesques and foliage, the decoration retaining traces of black pigment, in original wooden scabbard covered in silver chased with symmetrical designs of foliage against punched grounds, locket embossed and chased en suite, struck with Turkish silver marks, and with a loop for suspension on one side, chape bound with twisted silver wire (terminal missing)
