A Caucasian Kindjal
Late 19th Century

With sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section with slender fuller over most of its length on each side, both sides decorated with gold-damascened panels each with bird's head terminal, one panel containing arabesques, and the other with maker's name 'Tawfiq' in thuluth script, one side with a gold-damascened cartouche towards the point, waisted hilt with dark horn grip-scales divided by a beaded silver strap, and with nielloed silver mounts with beaded borders, in its wooden scabbard covered in burgundy velvet with nielloed silver locket, deep chape and suspension mount chased with arabesques en suite with the hilt, the chape with large spherical terminal
