A German Cranequin For A Crossbow
Dated 1581

With large circular gear-box open at the front and with bevelled cover and central bar retained by pins engaging with eye-holes, the recessed wheel pierced with four holes and with incised line and dotted decoration, clawed ratchet dated between roped borders and scrollwork, and struck with an indistinct maker's mark, the claw with a hinged heart-shaped plate etched 'Goll', downcurved faceted belt-hook, slender curved winding arm of tapering diamond section with turned swelling wooden handle, and original cord retaining loop
36 cm.
