The First Late 15th Century, The Second 16th/17th Century
The first of iron, comprising a narrow rectangular frame formed of two shaped side bars linked at the ends by respectively a slender rod and a cusped bar of flattened diamond section carrying in the centre the box that fits over the rear of the crossbow tiller, pierced with a pair of slots and slipped circular holes, fitted on each side with a pulley retained by a three branched bridle, cord spindle pierced with a circular hole at each end and rotating within the frame, tapering crank handles partly spirally-twisted becoming stiff diamond in section and turned at right angles at the end for the handles (missing), and with flat ovoidal belt hook, together with two well-made reproduction pulley gaffles; the second of russet iron and of characteristic 'goat's foot' construction (4)
