A Continental Target Crossbow
19th Century

With robust steel bow retained by wooden wedges and with string of twisted cords, figured wooden tiller (old repairs) of rectangular section with butt of wheel-lock form, the former inlaid along each side with white staghorn panels variously engraved in 17th century style with winged cherub's heads, addorsed marine monsters, scrollwork and foliage, the latter with rootwood panels and inlaid on the cheek-piece with a staghorn roundel engraved with an armoured crossbowman on horseback between panels en suite with the tiller, all within borders of engraved and plain white staghorn strips, sliding patch-box cover with roundel engraved with a crossbowman in contemporary costume within slender borders and opening to reveal a panel engraved with a prone naked female figure, wooden string release inlaid with an engraved staghorn panel, iron back-sights, chiselled iron trigger-guard from a late 17th century longarm, rectangular sling loop, brass butt-plate with iron button, set trigger, and iron loop for suspension
