A Small German (Nuremberg) Etched Iron Casket
Late 16th Century

Rectangular on four ball feet, the hinged lid with drop handle and rectangular keyhole (cover missing), the former with turned and moulded central feature, the interior of the lid etched with foliated strapwork against a dotted ground (etching worn) and fitted with a sprung two bolt mechanism, the heart-shaped ward-boxes and circular mount over the keyhole etched with foliage en suite, the interior painted orange, the exterior etched overall with panels framing symmetrical designs of foliated strapwork against a dotted ground, all within lines of ropework, with a key, probably later
10 cm. wide x 7.5 cm. high
