A Fine Italian Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with deep border engraved central fuller on each side of the forte stamped with a series of letters, the ricasso stamped on each side with the marks 'Caino' and 'S' crowned, iron hilt retaining some of its original gilding, composed of bars of circular section and comprising horizontal quillons swelling towards the tips, arms, two outer side-rings swelling at their centres, the upper one joined by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, inner-guard of three merging narrow curved bars rising to join the knuckle-guard, heavy globular pommel with mouldings at top and bottom and large integral button, and spirally fluted wooden grip bound with fine twisted iron wire between iron Turk's heads (some areas of light pitting)
