A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Circa 1600, Probably Italian

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section (tip reduced) with single fuller on each face of the forte stamped respectively 'Respici Imem' and 'Spici Inem', ricasso of rectangular section stamped front and back with sacred 'IHS' monogram within a rayed oval, iron hilt retaining faint traces of gilding and composed of bars of hexagonal section and comprising horizontal quillons swelling towards the tips, arms, three outer side-rings (minor repair) each swelling at its centre, the top most joined by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, inner-guard of four merging curved narrow bars also rising to join the knuckle-guard, associated(?) fluted barrel-shaped pommel with large integral button, and wooden grip of octagonal section bound with plaited iron wire (loose, top Turk's head missing, the surfaces with some light pitting)
