A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade (scattered surface pitting) of flattened hexagonal section (tip reduced) with central fuller on each side of the forte extended on the ricasso and incised on each face of the ricasso with a small saltire-shaped mark, iron hilt (pitted) of circular bars and comprising horizontal quillons widening towards the tips, arms, three outer side-rings swelling at their centres, the top one linked by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, the lower one filled with an iron plate pierced with circular and rectangular holes, inner-guard of two slender bars joined in the middle to form a side-ring filled with an iron plate pierced en suite with the one on the outer side and also rising to merge with the knuckle-guard, flattened ovoidal pommel with integral button and two raised triangular punched and engraved panels on the front, and spirally fluted wooden grip bound with plaited brass wire (Turk's heads missing)
