A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century

With sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section struck on each face of the ricasso with a bladesmith's mark, a crowned shield enclosing four fleurs-de-lys, iron hilt of bars of hexagonal section and comprising horizontal quillons (one replaced) swelling towards the tips, arms, three outer side-rings each swelling towards its centre, the bottom one filled with an iron plate pierced with circular holes, the top one joined by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, inner-guard of three slender merging bars also joining the knuckle-guard, associated large fluted barrel-shaped pommel with integral button, and later grip bound with copper wire (some surface pitting throughout)
