A Spanish Cup-Hilt Rapier
Late 17th Century

With sharply tapering double-edge blade of flattened ovoidal section stamped 'In Toledo' between dots within the fuller on both sides of the forte, hollowed rectangular ricasso, hilt comprising cup-guard with waved line engraved rim, long slender quillons of circular section with turned and moulded button terminals and linked to the top of the guard by a curved bar, the forward ones linked to the knuckle-guard en suite with the quillons, compressed rounded pommel fluted on top and with small button finial, and spirally-fluted swelling bone grip (some pitting overall)
