A Venetian Schiavona
17th Century

With tapering blade double-edged over a third of its length to the point and fullered along the back for two thirds of its length on each side, the bottom fuller extending to the point, the forte struck on both sides with an indistinct bladesmith's mark between saltire-shaped marks, characteristic iron basket guard with incised line decoration and comprising a fan-shaped arrangement of three bars each with waisted pointed finial, three diagonal bars above and two bars beneath each with central feature en suite, downbent arms, inner guard of slender bars incorporating a thumb-ring, one bar extending to the front and formed en suite with the guard, curved quillons with waisted button terminals, shield-shaped brass pommel with rosette on each side, and original cord-bound leather-covered grip (some rust patination and staining overall)
