A North European Sword
Mid-17th Century, Probably Dutch

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section retaining faint traces of etched decoration on both sides of the forte, iron hilt comprising quillons chiselled as flower-heads, side-rings each fitted with a curved plate pierced and chiselled with scrolling foliage centred on a female profile bust, the outer plate also involving two profile heads, the outer ring with central chiselled double flower-head, knuckle-guard and pommel en suite, the latter with button, and grip elaborately bound with plain, twisted and plaited brass wire between Turk's heads (some wear and rust patination)
