A Composite Cavalry Sword Of Swiss Type
Mid-17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, hilt of slender rounded bars comprising downbent rear quillon with globular finial, side-ring filled with a plate pierced with large and small circular holes and with central moulding carrying a hand-guard linked at the top to the pommel, and a diagonal bar linked to the knuckle-guard, the latter with turned central swelling, inner thumb-ring, pommel chiselled in the round as a lion's head with open mouth, and later grip bound with copper wire between brass ferrules (some light pitting)
