The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented By The House Of Assembly Jamaica To Commodore Arthur Farquhar In Testimony Of The High Sense Entertained Of His Service During The Late Disturbances. 1832.'
The presentation inscription refers to Commodore Farquhar's role whilst in command of the Blanche in the West Indies from 1830 to 1833. In 1832 a ten day rebellion took place know variously as the 'Baptist War', the 'Christmas Uprising' or the 'Great Jamaican Slave Revolt'. Led by the 'native' Baptist preacher Samuel Sharpe, 60,000 of the island's 300,000 slaves rebelled. The Jamaican government reacted brutally, however this reaction may well have accelerated the process of emancipation which was finally achieved in 1838. See footnote to lot 116
