With bright double-edged blade of hollowed diamond section over half its length to the point with narrow central fuller on each side, the forte on one side inscribed in gold 'A Monsieur Le Baron De Schwarz Garde Général Des Forêts' between panels of encrusted gold foliage involving respectively a stag and a sporting trophy in encrusted yellow gold, and on the other side 'Les Communes Des Miederbetschdorf D'Oberbetschdorf Et De Rittershoffen' between panels of gold foliage en suite involving respectively a wolf and a further sporting trophy above the date, hilt comprising cross-guard with bluntly-pointed langets and waisted quillons, cast and chased in relief on one side on a punched ground with a stag's head and branches of oak against a bow and quiver between a profile wolf's and boar's heads on the quillons, fluted ebony grip of waisted oval section with ovoidal pommel set with a silver escutcheon engraved with Baron de Schwarz's coat-of-arms, in original black leather scabbard (some loss of finish) with silver locket and chape each with a border of neo-classical ornament, the former with frog-hook cast and chased with a hound's head

The maker is either Joseph-François Manceaux or his son François-Jules. The father was the head of edged weapon production at Versailles and was the leading maker of his day. The son was the head of the arms manufactory at Tulle between 1840 and 1855
