JOHNSON (LIONEL)

Lionel Johnson's copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's Ballads, first edition, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper "Lionel Johnson London: 1890", publisher's blue cloth, bevelled boards, top edges gilt, uncut, endpapers lightly foxed, minor loss at head of spine, otherwise a good copy preserved in a drop-back box, morocco label, 8vo, Chatto & Windus, 1890

Footnotes

That year Johnson graduated with a first in literae humaniores from New College, Oxford, and moved to London where with his close friend Dowson, Yeats and others he was at the centre of the poetical movement of the 'nineties epitomised by the Rhymers' Club. In 1892 he was to write an admiring essay on Stevenson for the Academy magazine (6 August 1892, Robert Louis Stevenson: The Critical Heritage, edited by Paul Maixner, 1981, p. 405). By 1902 he was dead, legend has it (as related by Pound's 'Hugh Selwyn Moberley') by 'falling from a high stool in a pub'.
