JEKYLL (GERTRUDE)

Autograph letter signed, to Mr Jeans, thanking him for some mistletoe berries and describing her experiences with the plant ("...I hope I may live to see some results... But in any case it is satisfactory to provide for it. I never like to hear people say 'It will do for my time' – even in these little things I think one has to do the best one can for the future, and every little effort to make a small corner of the world more beautiful and interesting I always feel is something done to the good..."), 3 pages, headed paper, some slight thinning on the blank reverse of last page where formerly mounted, 8vo, Munstead Wood, 3 April 1914

Footnotes

'THE BEST ONE CAN FOR THE FUTURE': Gertrude Jekyll sums up her gardening aesthetic. She ends this letter (giving vent to a loathing of litter that Michael Silverman very much shared): "Alas our pretty country here is becoming sadly spoilt – Every road is littered with waste paper & every cross road disfigured with hideous signs".
