JAMES (HENRY)

Autograph letter signed, to the historian and civil servant, Sir Spencer Walpole, sending a cheque for £1: "I have been uncomprehendingly backward in sending you my subscription to the Sidney Colvin Testimonial... I am afraid that absolutely adhesive here as I am in these days, it will not be possible to me to take part in the transaction of the 6th which has however all my sympathy", 2 pages, headed paper, 4to, Lamb House, Rye, 27 June 1903

Footnotes

Sidney Colvin was a friend of James, as he was of many of the leading writers and painters of the day. He was at this time Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. In 1903 he had broken his leg, an accident which may have prompted the testimonial and James's dilatory beneficence.
