BEERBOHM (MAX)

Three autograph letters signed, to Mrs Matthias, discussing arrangements to go to the first day of a pageant in Oxford ("...Yesterday, rain began to fall punctually at four o'clock - the hour fixed for the performance. However, they struggled through bravely...") and thanking her for her good opinion ("...I am glad you liked the caricatures, though just now I can hardly believe in the possibility of anybody laughing at anything!..."); with the final page (signed) of another letter to her, 9 pages, headed paper, envelope, 8vo, 48 Upper Berkeley Street and Savile Club, undated (4)

Footnotes

Beerbohm provides us with a memorable account of an Oxfordshire pageant – although no doubt witnessed on another occasion – in his essay A Morris for May Day: 'It was in the wide street of a tiny village near Oxford that I saw them. Fantastic – high-fantastical – figures they did cut in their finery. But in demeanour they were quite simple, quite serious, these eight English peasants. They had trudged hither from the neighbouring village that was their home. And they danced quite simply, quite seriously... They were as deeply rooted in antiquity as the elm outside the inn' (Yet Again, 1909, pp. 109-110).
