Hogg ends this letter: "Please direct to James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd by Selkirk". Although now known for his Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824), a good deal of Hogg's contemporary fame derived from his (not always flattering) portrayal as the 'Ettrick Shepherd' in the hugely popular 'Noctes Amrosiana' in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. Duns Castle in Berwickshire is the Gothicised seat of the Hay family of Dun and Drumelzier, near where stands the Covenanters' Stone marking the spot where Leslie's army assembled during the First Bishops' War of 1639. This letter is not published in The Collected Letters of James Hogg, ii, 1820-1831, edited by Gillian Hughes (2006).
