HEDIN (SVEN)

Cabinet photograph signed and dated ("Sven Hedin, Paris 3 Feb 1898"), showing an elegantly dressed Hedin three-quarter length, sitting sideways in a chair, legs crossed, one hand raised to his chin, by Selma Jacobsson, Stockholm; boldly inscribed by Hedin at the foot, original studio thick card mount, bevelled edges finished in silver, some light foxing, insignificant surface abrasions, but in excellent condition overall, size of image 142 x 103mm., overall 166 x 109mm., Paris, 3 February 1898

Footnotes

This striking portrait of Hedin was inscribed after his return from his first expedition of 1893 to 1897, during which he travelled through Russian Central Asia, crossing the Pamirs through Kyrgyzstan, traversing the Taklamakan along the Keriya river, exploring the Lower Tarim in the direction of Lop-Nor, and travelling through previously uncharted areas of the Tsaidam Plateau in Northern Tibet to Peking. He described and illustrated these travels in Through Asia in 1898, the book that in its turn was to inspire Aurel Stein to follow in his tracks and uncover the artistic heritage of the Silk Road.
