GRACE (W.G.)

Autograph letter signed, to Charles Blundell, asking for news: "It is an age since I have seen or heard from you or anyone at Halstead. What have the beagles done. I suppose it has been too dry and hard for much scent. Have you killed all the rabbits, if not I am disengaged all next week except Tuesday", one page, conjugate leaf removed, headed paper, 8vo, Fairmount, Mottingham, Eltham, Kent, 3 October 1913

Footnotes

'Grace could excel at any sport he chose to pursue. As a young man he had been a hurdler and a sprinter. Most of his life he beagled, fished, and shot. Both golf and bowls claimed his interest in his later years. He played golf to a handicap of nine and captained England against Scotland in the first bowls international in 1903.... Grace played cricket almost to the end of his life. His final game, on 25 July 1914, brought him an undefeated 60 for his local club, Eltham. In all his cricket he had made nearly 100,000 runs and taken well over 7000 wickets' (Gerald M. D. Howat, ODNB).

Charles Blundell was a farmer of Mapledene, Halstead, near Sevenoaks, who was a member of the Halstead Place Beagles and regularly went out hunting with Grace.
