MAPS - AFRICA

RAMUSIO (GIOVANNI BATTISTA) [Africa. Prima tavola], engraved map by Giovanni Gastaldi after Ramusio, restoration at centre-fold with loss of blank channel between the two halves of the map, but fine impression, 275 x 390mm., [Venice, 1563]

Footnotes

A fine impression of the engraved version of the Ramusio-Gastaldi map of Africa. It generally follows the earlier Ramusio-Gastaldi woodcut map of Africa, but with the addition two more sea monsters in the South Atlantic. It was engraved as the 1554 woodcut map was destroyed in 1557, and a new map was needed for the subsequent editions of Ramusio's Delle Navigationi et Viaggi in 1563, 1588, 1606, and 1613. See illustration overleaf.
