DICKENS (CHARLES)

Autograph letter signed ("Charles Dickens"), to John Angus, regretting that he could not see his son last night, but promising to look at his manuscript if he sends it to London, one page, on Gad's Hill writing-paper, some dust-staining, conjugate leaf removed, 8vo, Manchester, 3 February (misdated 2 February) 1867

Footnotes

DICKENS AND AN ASPIRING NOVELIST: the recipient of this letter was Senior Clerk at the General Registry Office, Somerset House, whose son William had written a three-decker novel. Three days later Dickens was to send William a devastating assessment of the work, telling him he had no clue about life or character, and no ability as an author. Our letter is published in the Pilgrim Edition, xi, p.309.
