Footnotes

EXTREMELY RARE COPY WITH THE PLATES FINELY HAND-COLOURED AND MOUNTED ON CARD. Published in parts the work was initiated by Joseph Hogarth who commissioned the foremost landscape artists of the day (including Turner, David Roberts, Clarkson Stanfied, D.O. Hill, and J.D. Harding) to paint views throughout Scotland. The enormous cost of the project - David Roberts alone was paid £1000 for his contribution - led to its' commercial failure, and limited sale. This copy is bound as two volumes, with all the text pages called for by Abbey, who describes a set bound in four volumes.
