"Voyage pittoresque was "a monumental, comprehensive, encyclopedic report, in which are recorded many monuments that have now disappeared... the most magnificent, extensive, and accurate work published on Spain to that date" (Millard). Laborde, the son of a wealthy banker, was attached to the embassy of Lucien Bonaparte in Spain in 1800. He subsequently travelled throughout the Spanish peninsula, accompanied by a number of gifted draftsmen, recording in detail both the ancient and Moorish monuments.
