DICKENS (CHARLES)

Autograph letter signed ("Charles Dickens"), to Mrs Hunton, explaining that he would happily have signed a memorial testifying to the late Mr Macfarlane's literary merits if he had not "already signed three other Memorials strongly pressing the Minister for pensions", and explaining that so long as these cases are still pending he would consider it "unreasonable on my part to urge others", one page, headed paper, lightly soiled, adhesive residue to reverse, showing through to recto, conjugate leaf removed, 8vo, Gads Hill Place, 4 November 1868

Footnotes

Dickens was a tireless organizer of benefits and petitioner on behalf of the families of dead colleagues (often a good excuse for amateur dramatics): he was at the times of this letter busy raising funds for his old illustrator George Cattermole who had died that July leaving a widow and seven children; Leigh Hunt had been an earlier beneficiary. See illustration on preceding page.
