FORD (RICHARD)

Tauromachia, or the Bull-Fights of Spain. Illustrated by Twenty-six Plates, Representing the Most Remarkable Incidents and Scenes in the Arenas of Madrid, Seville, and Cadiz. The Whole Drawn and Lithographed from Studies Made Expressly for the Work, by Lake Price, first edition, 26 tinted lithographed plates by Lake Price (including additional pictorial title), blindstamp on title and margin of one plate, publisher's morocco-backed decorative cloth gilt [Palau 236895; Tooley 385], folio (559 x 368mm.), J. Hogarth, 1852

Footnotes

A very good copy of Ford's finely illustrated work on bull-fighting in Spain. Richard Ford (1796–1858) travelled for nearly three years throughout the country in the early 1830s, whilst the illustrator Lake Price (1810–1896) toured extensively throughout Europe. Ford felt that bull-fighting "brings out the living people of Spain in all their genuine nationality; to the artist, the exhibition is singularly attractive... the pomp and circumstance of the combat, are no less picturesque than the attitudes and actions of the performers and spectators", adding that Lake Price had attended bull-fights on numerous occasions with the result that his views offer "a mirror of the bull-fight, from beginning to end" (Preface). See illustration overleaf.
