Elwes (1846-1922) became interested in lilies during a visit to the Himalayas. When published in 1880, this work included nearly all the varieties then known in cultivation and was produced in consultation with the greatest botanical experts in the field. Subscribers paid seven guineas in total for the seven separate parts. See illustration overleaf.
