DAGUERRE (LOUIS JACQUES MANDÉ)

History and Process of Photogenic Drawing by Means of the Daguerréotype. Published by Order of the French Government... With Notes and Explanations by M. Arago, title and 46 pages, 6 lithographed plates, 3 leaves re-inserted with tape, Royal Photographic Society stamp throughout, later half morocco, rubbed, 8vo, William Strange, 1839

Footnotes

RARE. Published in the same year as the original French edition, this is one of three English translations rushed out to capitalise on the immediate impact of Daguerre's work which was being demonstrated in London as early as september by M. de Sainte-Croix [see R. Derek Wood, Ste. Croix in London, History of Photography, Vol. 17 (1), pp.101-7, 1993]. The publisher William Strange placed an advertisement for this work in The Times on 14 September, and in The Literary Gazette in which he mispelled most of the information "M. Daguene's process of Daguenotype, or Philographic Drawing". The advertisement in the book assures the reader that "The following translation has been made with much care".
