POULTON (SAMUEL E., 1819-1898) A collection of 50 botanical stereoviews of the gardens at Chatsworth, albumen prints, 40 hand-coloured, glazed, sealed with gold gummed paper, 85 x 175mm., contained within a fine, red velvet lined, rosewood presentation case, the lid with an inlayed lozenge brass plate engraved "Chatsworth Stereographs by Poulton. 147 Strand & Reading", [c.1859]; together with a contemporary brass and mahogany Brewster sterescope (2)

Images include: Chatsworth's "conservative wall", The Great Conservatory designed by Joseph Paxton, an interior view of the lily house, "Victoria amazonica" (the plant Paxton successfully bred with the aid of a heated pool he designed and whose organic structure was the inspiration behind his design for the Crystal Palace); Thomas Archer's Cascade house and waterfall; numerous views of tropical plants (including bananas), and a number of estate buildings.
