ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT

"Christmas Mass", illuminated by "Marie Louise Pelline (née de Dalberg), Countess Granville, 46 pages, on vellum, each elaborately illuminated within wide decorative borders (one with the Granville arms, one with three vignettes of the interior of the Great Exhibition, 2 Biblical scenes, many with floral or fruit decorations), many heightened with burnished gold, additional illuminated leaf with vignette of a seated Saint loosely inserted, blind- and gilt-stamped calf by Gruel, g.e., metal corner-pieces, clasps and hasps, preserved in original silk-lined box (worn), 8vo (220 x 150mm.), signed at end "Marie Louise Pelline de Dalberg Granville, fecit 1854"

A fine example of a Victorian illuminated manuscript, with 48 highly decorated leaves in a style influenced by the chromolithographed gift books of Owen Jones and Henry Noel Humphreys, and in the original binding by Gruel. It is signed by Marie Louise Pelline, Countess Granville (1812-1860), daughter of Emmerich Josef Wolfgang Heribert, Duke of Dalberg, first married to Sir Richard Acton, and later to the 2nd Earl Granville.
