CARADOC OF LLANCARFAN, Saint

The Historie of Cambria, Now Called Wales: A Part of the Most Yland of Brytaine, written in the Brytish Language abive two hundreth yeares past: translated into English by H. Lloyd, first edition, black and roman letter, title within wide woodcut historiated border, woodcut portraits, initials and decorations, device on colophon, title torn with some loss, light dampstains to the margin of several leaves, a few pages toned, bookplate of Paul Panton, manuscript ownership inscription on front free endpaper, eighteenth century calf, joints split, rubbed [STC 4606; Sabin 40914], small 4to, Ralfe Newberie and Henrie Denham, [1584]

Footnotes

The first edition, dedicated to Sir Philip Sidney whose father Henry, as Lord President of Wales, had instigated the translation into English. Sabin notes that "a special interest in the work for the American collector consists of its relation of the most ancient 'Voyages and Discovery of the West Indies, performed by Madoc, the sonne of Owen Guined, prince of North Wales, anno 1170'.
