ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT

Two leaves from an Antiphoner, each with a large historiated initial [a Martyr Saint, and the Virgin Mary], on vellum, the initials (90 x 85mm., and 85 x 75mm.) painted in bright colours against blue skies, and burnished gold, leafy extensions into margins with burnished gold bezants and radiating penwork, on leaves with 7 lines of text in a rounded gothic hand and of music on a 4-line red stave, rubrics in red, mounted, framed and glazed, image to view 372 x 270mm., [Lombardy, perhaps Cremona, late fifteenth century] (2)

Historiated initials: half-length young male martyr saint holding a book and palm leaf, within a large initial 'I' ("Iste sanctis..", part of the Common of Martyrs); half-length figure of the Virgin with hands folded across her breast, within a large initial 'H' ("Hodie nata est...", from the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin).
