CHESTERFIELD (PHILIP DORMER STANHOPE, fourth Earl of)

Autograph letter in the third person: "Lord and Lady Chesterfield present their respects to the Duke and Dutchess of Newcastle. They are very sorry that any return of Her Grace's complaint should Oblige her to take a Bath Journey which they believe is not very agreeable to her, but of which however they will profitt, by paying their Court to her Grace; and to the Duke, whenever he happens to be there", one page, annotated "c. 1765" in pencil in a modern hand, marginal nicks, short split at fold neatly repaired, with a portrait engraving, 4to, "Oct: ye 24th"

Footnotes

Chesterfield and Newcastle – twice Prime Minister – were relations, old friends, and political allies, who from time to time fell out. In 1763 Chesterfield wrote a 'Character' of Newcastle, describing him as hard-working, good-natured, and incorruptible, but also as 'exceedingly timorous, both personally and politically, dreading the least innovation'; believing that 'he had no superior parts or eminent talents' and was essentially ineffective (see Miscellaneous Works, edited by Lord Mahon, ii, pp. 483-5).
